Presentation of the 2017 nominees at the Korzo Theater

In a relaxed setting at the Korzo Theater, jury chair Noël Fischer presented the nominees for the Piket Art Prizes 2017. "The Piket Art Prizes are a phenomenon, and it is unique in the Netherlands that a city attracts and stimulates artists and young people based on private donations," Fischer said. Leo Spreksel, artistic director of the theater and winner of the Piket Jury Prize, mentioned in his opening speech that the Piket Art Prizes are "a fantastic award that is about stimulating art in The Hague."

Fischer added that it is important for young artists to "get that extra bit of wind in their sails." Karel van Laere, winner of the theatre category in 2014, confirmed this in a short interview with Fischer. "The prize brought me a certain attention and made it possible for me to be connected to the National Theatre as a new creator, and for my work to get a chance in The Hague."

Of the present nominees – the entire theatre category was on stage – Julien Guettab (Painting) said, for example, that he is "very happy" with his nomination. Fellow nominee Mattia Papp (visual arts) added that he had a "pleasant, informal conversation" with the expert jury. Juul van Helvoirt (dance) said about her nomination that she finds it "exciting and very fun" and that she "really didn't expect it."

Diversity of the 2017 nominees

This year, the list of nominees for the Piket Art Prizes stands out for even more diversity. Not only were professional young artists, actors, and dancers nominated, but the jury also chose to nominate a promising choreographer and theater maker. In addition, the visual arts jury chose to nominate artists who work at the intersection of painting, while also using sculpture, design techniques, and video art.

Award ceremony

During a festive ceremony at the Korzo Theater on Monday, November 27, the winners will be announced per art discipline. The three winners will receive a monetary prize of 8,000 euros, and both the winners and nominees will receive an award from artist Florentijn Hofman (Rubber Duck, Beukelsblauw).

The prize

The Piket Art Prizes have been awarded since 2014 and are intended for artists under 30 years of age in the disciplines of painting, dance, and theatre. The expert jury consists of professionals from the various art disciplines, and each year they compile the list of nominees from a broad survey of the art talent active in and around The Hague.

About Frederik Hendrik Piket

Frederik Hendrik Piket (1927-2011), a lawyer and member of the Dutch Senate for the CHU (later CDA), was a great admirer of painting, dance, and theatre. After his passing, a foundation was established that aims to encourage three young, promising artists under 30 years of age with an annual prize.
