These are the nominees for the Piket Art Prizes 2024

The nine nominees for the eleventh edition of the Piket Art Prizes, awarded to young, promising artists in the fields of painting, dance, and theater, were announced on Wednesday. The names of the winners in each category will be revealed on Monday, November 18, during a festive awards ceremony at Theater aan het Spui in The Hague. “The jury has once again spotted remarkable young talents who have a bright future ahead of them, and whom we as a foundation would like to highlight,” says Marie Jeanne de Rooij, director of the Piket Art Prizes, about this year’s nominees.

Adam Centko, Shani Leseman, and Ellen Yiu are nominated in the Painting category. Demi Bawon, Kenji van Nieuwenhuizen, Vladyslav Detiuchenko, and Veronika Rakitina are nominated in the Dance category, and finally, Koen ter Braak, Kim Karssen, and Patsy Kroonenberg have been selected by the expert jury in the Theater category. “I have never been nominated for anything in my life,” says The Hague actress/theater maker Patsy Kroonenberg. “Let alone won anything, and now I know how that feels: it feels good.”

“I feel an overwhelming sense of appreciation for everyone who has supported and inspired me on this journey,” says visual artist Ellen Yiu. “I am deeply honored by the nomination.” NDT 1 dancer Demi Bawon: “It is, of course, a huge honor to be recognized, especially by experts from the dance world. Dance is so close to me, and the fact that I can inspire people with something I do with great love is a big privilege that I do not take for granted.”

The jury

A professional jury, led this year by Paard director Majel Blonden, searches each year for young, talented artists with a connection to The Hague. This year, the jury consists of visual artist Pietertje van Splunter, Johan Gustavsson (Experimental Art Space 1646), Erik Kaiel (dance collective Arch8), Mitchell-lee van Rooij (Korzo), John de Weerd (Zaal 3 and the Parade), and Ellen Goemans (actress, teacher, and mentor at HKU Acting School). “It’s great that there is an award for young creators: that they are seen, and that Mr. Piket has used his fortune to support young, talented artists,” says jury chair Blonden.

Award ceremony

For each discipline (Painting, Dance, and Dramatic Arts), the jury selects three main winners, who each receive a prize of 6,000 euros. Since last year, the other nominees no longer leave empty-handed, as they too are winners. They now receive not 2,000, but 3,000 euros. Additionally, all nominees will receive an award, the Hammer, designed by renowned artist Joep van Lieshout specifically for the Piket Art Prizes.

About the Piket Art Prizes

The Piket Art Prizes have been awarded since 2014 to young artists with a connection to The Hague, either because they have developed their talents there or because their work contributes to the city's cultural climate. Frederik Hendrik Piket (1927-2011), the founder of the prize, was a lawyer and a member of the Dutch Senate for the CHU (later CDA) and a great lover of art and culture. After his death, a foundation was established to annually encourage promising, professional artists under the age of 30 with an award.
