Winners Piket Art Prizes 2023
The winners of the anniversary edition of the Piket Art Prizes 2023 have been announced. Katarina Head (Painting), the breaking crew Heavy Hitters (Dance), and Finn Borath and Boris de Klerk (Dramatic Arts) are the fortunate winners. They will each receive a cash prize of 8,000 euros and a unique artwork, the Hammer, which was designed and created by artist Joep van Lieshout. The Piket Jury Prize goes to drama teacher, theater maker, and writer Marcel Roijaards. The Piket Art Prizes are awarded annually to promising young professional artists in the fields of painting, dance, and theater. In this tenth edition, for the first time, all the other nominees will also receive a cash prize of 2,000 euros.
Katarina Head (Painting)
Jury’s opinion: “Katarina’s worlds touch on those of Jheronimus Bosch, but also the thinking of Escher and the esotericism of Mondrian. The mysticism that Katarina Head evokes with her work invites the viewer to take a closer look at the reality in which we live.”
Heavy Hitters (Dance)
Jury’s opinion: “They have expanded the concept of what hip-hop could be, showing how it can engage audiences, not as a fixed concept, but as a living, evolving practice.”
Finn Borath and Boris de Klerk (Dramatic Arts)
Jury’s opinion: “Boris and Finn present a script without words that every viewer ‘reads’ and experiences in their own way. Their work is suitable for different spaces and, in an attractive and bold way, steps outside the boundaries of traditional theater.”
Piket Jury Prize: Marcel Roijaards
Jury’s opinion: “Marcel is a committed and passionate person who is involved in the profession, his students, and his work in a soft, intense, and emotional way. Quietly and in the background, he is of immense importance to an entire generation of young creators from The Hague, all of whom speak highly of him.”
Other Nominees
In addition to the winners, this year, Menno Pasveer and Kamila Sipika were nominated in the Painting category, Justin Brown and Sophie Whittome in the Dance category, and Ensemble Nieuwe Theaterwerkers (ENT) and David Westera in the Theater category. See the full list of nominees here.

About the Piket Art Prizes
The Piket Art Prizes have been awarded since 2014 to young artists with a connection to The Hague, either because they have developed their talents there or because their work contributes to the city's cultural climate. The prize’s namesake, Frederik Hendrik Piket (1927-2011), a lawyer and member of the Dutch Senate for the CHU (later CDA), was a great lover of art and culture. After his death, a foundation was established to annually encourage three promising, professional artists under the age of 30 with an award.
